Spring 2018 Anime Worth Checking Out

Hard to believe that we are already 2 weeks into Spring 2018 anime. I have to say though, this start of the new season is really unfair. Unlike many other seasons before this, there was no 1-week seasonal break for Spring anime 2018. Normally before a new season starts there is a 1 to 2-week break where nothing comes out. But it seems this season there was no break like this. Winter anime just ended heck some were still ongoing. Yet spring still instantly started despite some winter anime still airing. Wierd if you ask me, seems like there is too much anime now airing every season. Making it so that the seasons can no longer have that 1-week break before the start of each new season. I don’t know if that high amount of anime airing is a good or bad thing.

Well now let’s not get sidetracked. Let us get started with the anime airing this season. Let me just make one thing perfectly clear.

This list about Spring 2018 anime will not contain sequels, OVA, Movies, and remakes

Spring anime 2018 has a lot of sequels many people know about already. So we are putting the spotlight on brand new series getting adaptions this season as Spring 2018 anime and not as anime from previous seasons. I would like to only focus on bringing to light some brand new adaptions that people might have missed considering so many sequels are airing this season. Like seriously there are SO many sequels airing this season it’s actually ridiculous. There are more sequels than new anime series in Spring 2018 anime. It’s like studios are too scared to make new stuff now they making sequels to everything. I guess that’s a good thing maybe now people will stop complaining about there series never getting sequels.

I still have a right to complain though since Spice And Wolf hasn’t gotten a new season yet

It Should also be noted that I decided to do things differently for this Spring 2018 anime. Instead of instantly making this list. I decided to wait 2 weeks before starting this list. Why you might ask, well simply put I wanted the 1st episode of every anime to air before making this list. I wanted to give every new series a chance and then make a list of anime new anime this season that are actually worth watching and or might have the potential to be good. Hopefully, that leads to me actually giving people some good series to watch. It would probably include ones they might have heard about and also some they didn’t know anything about.

Now then let us get started with the list of Spring 2018 anime that started airing recently and which I would highly recommend. So, 1st on the list of Spring 2018 anime:

1. Hinamatsuri

Series Summary

Thoughts on series.

Where is the love for this series? no seriously where? nobody is talking about it and so little people actually watched it. Even tho this season just started. It’s safe to already say this might be the most underrated series this season. Which is just sad because this is an actual good series.

The first episode pleased me very much. While pretty much following the manga first chapter perfectly in the first episode. The anime also did something it didn’t need to. It hinted at future events that might happen. Foreshadowing basically which I liked since this did not appear in the manga from what I’ve read. I’m honestly okay with anime doing these kind things as long as they perfectly follow the manga up to the point where these events it hinted happens. Which seems like this anime will do. Since it’s already pretty much following the manga perfectly.

Now then let me not drag this thing out and simply give you a reason for why you have to check out this series.

Hinamatsuri first and foremost is a comedy. But not your average kind of comedy. Its comedy style is in the same league as Gintama. But not as over the top and dramatic Gintama comedy. It has more of a focus on the Comedy and slice of life aspect along with some supernatural elements on the side. The series also throws in some sad themes and characters that can pull your heartstrings. Additionally, the series blends a lot of genre’s fairly well which keeps you very entertained while watching it. It’s honestly a really fun series to watch.

First Episode did a good job setting up the main dynamic of the 2 Main characters

For people who have never heard of this series and know nothing about it, the first episode gives you a good idea of how things will play out in the series between the two main characters. The MC though a Yakuza, now has to change his ways because of a random girl with supernatural powers Hina (Second Main character) popping up at this place. She just randomly appears in his life in the oddest way possible. It’s clear as day that he hates this girl and doesn’t want to look after her. But he is kinda forced to do it. Because the main girl basically scares him with her supernatural powers and could destroy everything he worked hard in the underworld to get. So now he has to take care of her.

Though the anime makes it clear that he is scared of her and kinda hates her. As he continues to stay with her, he really doesn’t give off a feeling that he hates her. Instead, he seems to come off as a father figure taking care of her and even he starts to notice this. Consequently, as the episodes go on they start to grow used to each other and the interactions are honestly really great.

By the end of the episode, you’ve already grown to love these two MC’s and can’t wait to see what other odd situations they will get them self into. I highly recommend if you have not watched this to give it a shot it’s worth your time.

Thought on Series.

This is another anime from a manga I loved reading. With a kind of unique setup for a romance series. I wanted to talk about how I hope this adaption follows the manga. But this is one of those rare cases where as long as it follows the basic themes of the manga. The anime doesn’t need to follow the manga at all. Since there is basically no story in the series.

The series is all about character interaction revolving around there hobbies and not a deeply romantic story so don’t expect that from this series. In fact, this series doesn’t beat around the bush. It pretty much gets right to the point and focusses on two main characters living together by the end of the first episode. So despite it not having a deep romance story, the romantic interactions between the four main characters are all great. It will probably end up being the most fun romance series you’ve watched in a while.

Though the two main focus MCs are great, my favourite part of this series doesn’t come from them but instead comes from these two characters who are also main characters but not the main focus of the series.

Hanako and Tarou visual

Hanako and Tarou

Hanako and Tarou interactions are the best and always leave me with a smile on my face. They the best couple even though it comes off as they hate each other. They actually love each other a lot and the fights often end with some adorable moments. Honestly, it was a blast to read and now I can’t wait to see it in the anime.  Speaking of the anime.

Even tho I said the anime doesn’t need to follow the manga for this series…

Though I normally do not like A-1 Pictures as a studio. I will admit they did well with this adaption so far. I said above they really don’t need to follow the manga. But they still went and did an almost perfect adaptation of the first 3 chapters of the manga. Just adding a couple of new scenes here and there which wasn’t in the manga. Which was completely fine because the manga chapters for this series are short so filling in some spots with extra anime original scenes is fine. The anime perfectly captured the tone of the manga with its animation and voice acting perfectly capturing the characters interaction which was great in the manga. Honestly, from episode 1 alone, I could not have asked for a better adaption of this series. I’m happy with it. This is a romance anime I highly recommend people start watching.

Thought on Series.

Okay, before I say anything else.  let’s just start with the elephant in the room….well bear in this case. The CGI bear that seems to be triggering everyone.

Bear Scene Golden Kamuy Episode 1

A Majestically Bad CGI Bear From the First Episode Of the Anime.

I have been seeing people call this anime bad simply because of this CGI bear scene. Which has been really god damn stupid from my point of view, Simple labelling a series bad and dropping it because a bear CGI scene triggered them? People are hating on this series simply because of this scene. They seem to be judging the anime just from this scene alone and not looking at the episode as a whole.

Yes, I can agree that CGI scene was bad and felt really out of place. But that didn’t stop the rest of the episode from being great. Don’t hate on the series from that one aspect alone. The overall episode was so well done setting up the two main characters and the overall goal of the series. The anime adapted the manga so well I honestly can let the bad CGI slide. I mean come on people it’s not like the whole anime is CGI, it was just that one scene. Be happy that the rest of the series is still animated in 2D. This isn’t like Berserk (2016).

Don’t Let one scene cause you to drop and hate a whole series because that’s just damn stupid. Despite the CGI scene I would highly recommend people to watch and or continue this series because believe me it’s worth the ride sticking with it.

Thought on Series.

At this point is there anything I even should be saying about this anime? Pretty sure everyone by now is watching this. Which makes sense because one can not deny out of all the anime airing this season, this anime probably had one of the strongest starts. Even the second episode continues to hold up the first episodes strong start. Heck, the second episode might have been better than the first episode. If this series can keep up the momentum it currently has and doesn’t stumble over its own hype, then it’s safe to say now that this might end up being anime of the season for Spring 2018.

Thought on Series.

Okay, I know this one is weird and many might not watch it because it looks weird. But believe me, this series is a damn blast to watch. It’s very misleading with its themes when you look at it for the first time. But when you actually watch it, but when you start to watch, it ain’t that bad. In fact, it’s really damn funny and entertaining to watch. Honestly, I was shocked at how fun it ended up being. The anime basically makes fun of the Magical Girl genre. There is absurd and over the top comedy and even 4th wall breaking at the start of the series.

The whole first episode was like you on a Rollercoaster ride of over the top reactions. It’s really hard to explain this series you just need to watch it and see how much fun it actually is. Because I can’t find the right words to explain. I can’t help but recommend this series. Yes, it won’t be for everyone but if you looking for a fun magical girl parody type comedy then I recommend you give this anime a watch. Just try out the first episode. It’s worth your time.

Thought on Series.

I wouldn’t be wrong if I said this is probably the, most unique anime airing this season. Sadly not many know about it, most just ended up ignoring it due to its childish look. Which I can understand. But after actually starting the anime and watching a bit of it, I was instantly hooked on the main female character alone. I like her character a lot, a simple and plain looking main character that doesn’t try to stand out at all. But, often without knowing it, she spouts out her true feelings. Though she looks plain, dull and kind of boring, her thought process might be more complex then we think. While also being oddly cute. Though later on it’s revealed that she has a bad habit of saying out everything she thinks out loud.

On another note, The introduction to her having to pilot these dragons that look like planes is very odd. But it is also very lighthearted and silly. Honestly, it’s really damn interesting to me. The series really comes off as something that is very childish looking but there are hints of a very interesting story in this anime. I really can’t express how good the first episode of this anime was. Even the animation was great.

I do highly recommend people check out this anime. There is more to it then meets the eye.

Thought on Series.

If there is one thing that instantly comes to mind when I was only halfway through the first episode. It would be that it’s a really damn charming series. There were a few moments in it where I just sat with a smile enjoying the silly interactions between the characters. But even though I enjoyed it a lot, there is not much to talk about plot-wise. But all the characters are fun and very likeable.

The set up for the series is pretty simple and even predictable if you have watched many Slice of Life anime like this before. That does not stop the series from being really fun to watch. If you looking for a fun Slice of Life series to watch this season, then just like It’s Difficult to Love an Otaku, this is something worth checking out.

2 Main characters of Tada Doesn't Fall in Love

Tada and Teresa

And that pretty much brings my article to an end with what I think is worth watching in Spring 2018 anime.

Overall compared to last season this Spring 2018 anime season, in all aspects is much better than last season. Winter 2018 had a heavier focus on Slice of Life anime airing that season which was really good. Like there was some really damn good Slice of Life anime that aired that season. But that was pretty much it, there were only a few other genre type anime that aired which drew peoples attention. But the Slice of Life anime outweighed all the other genres airing that season. Pretty much, Overlord II, Pop Team Epic, and Kokkoku were the only anime last season that wasn’t Slice Of Life, that kept peoples attention while the rest ended up being underwhelming or just downright disappointments. On the other hand, pretty much all the Slice of Life stuff was great. There really wasn’t a good balance of genres last season in my opinion.

But Spring 2018 anime is Different.

Spring 2018 anime has a nice balance of almost all genres. You can’t go into this season and come out saying there was nothing interesting to watch. There is without a doubt something this season you will start and probably end up enjoying even if it isn’t an anime on this list. Spring 2018 anime honestly has a nice balance of everything which makes this season overall good so far for me.

So speaking of speaking of Spring 2018 anime. Tell us in the comment section what are you watching this season? If you watching nothing then hopefully this list might help you pick something to watch, And speaking of lists before sure to check out our previous list. 5 Old School Anime Series That Recently Received an Anime
